Territorial Cooperation

Interreg is a general brand name to refer to European Territorial Cooperation (ETC) under cohesion policy. Interreg is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance and the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI). In 2021-2027, Interreg will support cross-border mobility, and efforts to develop environmental protection, emergency services, skilled jobs and access to public services for the next EU generation as well as better cooperation governance and a safer, more secure Europe. Interreg includes the following sub-programmes:

1. Interreg A – cross border cooperation

2. Interreg B – transnational cooperation

3. Interreg C – interregional cooperation to reinforce the effectiveness of cohesion policy:

  • Interreg Europe
  • URBACT
  • Interact
  • ESPON

4. Interreg D - outermost regions’ cooperation

Interreg projects beyond EU borders cover several areas in the world:

  • Interreg NEXT (Eastern and Southern Neighbourhood partner countries);
  • Interreg Outermost Regions (EU’s remote regions and their neighbourhoods outside of the EU);
  • Interreg IPA, (EU Member States and Western Balkan countries and Turkey). It helps countries in pre-accession to alleviate border obstacles and manage programmes in the same way Member States are doing. Cooperation of this kind bolsters the countries’ capacities to improve people’s lives and builds trust with neighbouring territories.

More information about relevant Interreg programmes can be found in subpages.
