Mitigation

Located in central Greece, Domokos is taking bold steps to improve energy efficiency in its schools and daycare centres. By implementing advanced heating and cooling systems and using renewable energy sources, the municipality is reducing its reliance on fossil fuels while ensuring a healthier and sustainable environment. These upgrades support Domokos' long-term decarbonisation strategy, reinforcing its commitment to climate neutrality.

Enhancing the energy efficiency of its public buildings

Domokos’ project starts by improving energy efficiency in its educational facilities through the installation of air-to-water heat pumps for heating and reversible heat pumps for climate control in classrooms and offices. To further enhance its decarbonisation strategies, photovoltaic systems have been installed on several buildings, generating clean energy and enabling net metering.

These upgrades in schools ensure that educational institutions directly benefit from reduced energy consumption, improved indoor comfort, and lower operational costs. By prioritising schools, Domokos is not only creating healthier and more sustainable learning environments but also setting an example for broader public infrastructure initiatives.

The integration of these advanced technologies represents a substantial investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy, requiring careful planning and resources. Additionally, the project’s scale—covering high schools, elementary schools, and daycare centres—demonstrates a comprehensive approach to achieving full decarbonisation.

The importance of stakeholder engagement

Engagement has been central to the project's development and implementation. Domokos has actively involved key stakeholders—such as local citizens, schools, and educational staff—in discussions about the objectives and benefits. Public consultations and informational sessions have raised awareness of the environmental and economic advantages of these energy-efficient upgrades.

Furthermore, private companies specialising in renewable energy and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems were engaged for technical support. Partnerships with research organisations helped assess the environmental impact and feasibility of the solutions, and civil society groups were informed, creating broad support for the initiative.

Through collaboration, Domokos is demonstrating that even smaller municipalities can successfully implement decarbonisation projects.

Ensuring comfort for all

As part of its strategy, the city is prioritising inclusivity by enhancing heating and cooling systems in schools and daycare centres, creating a safe and comfortable environment for all students. Children with special needs or health conditions, such as asthma, particularly benefit from improved air quality and temperature control.

In addition, by adopting energy-efficient and renewable technologies, Domokos is reducing energy costs and lowering public spending, indirectly supporting vulnerable families. These upgrades in public schools and daycare centres ensure that everyone in the community benefits from a cleaner, more sustainable, and cost-efficient environment.
