The Gran Canaria Island Energy Council (CIEGC) held the Gran Canaria Climate and Sustainable Energy Fair at IES Santa Brígida, with the participation of 400 students from ten educational centers across six municipalities.
The fair is part of the Covenant of Mayors initiative, aimed at raising awareness among young people about environmental protection, climate change adaptation, and responsible energy use. Additionally, it seeks to promote awareness of the Covenant of Mayors and encourage the implementation of energy efficiency improvement measures in schools.
The Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Knowledge of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Raúl García Brink, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration of various public and private entities in this event and highlighted that "since 2019, when the initiative began, more than 3,600 students, 46 educational centers, and 19 municipalities have participated."
"Today alone, we gathered about 400 students at IES Santa Brígida who have done a remarkable job throughout the program," he added.
This fair is the result of three months of work, during which a total of 269 students and their responsible teachers received training. The program included the creation of an energy committee at the schools, the completion of an audit, and the development of energy efficiency proposals and improvements under guidance and training.
The CIEGC set up two tents where activities focused on mitigating global warming were held, with informative sessions on the creation of energy communities and resilient cities.
