LIFE Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

The climate sub-programme supports projects in the areas of farming, land use, peatland management, renewable energies and energy efficiency. It co-finances projects in the areas of urban adaptation and land-use planning, the resilience of infrastructure, sustainable management of water in drought-prone areas, flood and coastal management, the resilience of the agricultural, forestry and tourism sectors, and/or support to the EU's outermost regions.

LIFE CET

Projects are co-financed under the LIFE Clean Energy Transition sub-programme in the following five areas of intervention:

  • Building a national, regional and local policy framework supporting the clean energy transition;

  • Accelerating technology roll-out, digitalisation, new services and business models and enhancement of the related professional skills on the market;

  • Attracting private finance for sustainable energy;

  • Supporting the development of local and regional investment projects;

LIFE

Created in 1992, the LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action, which has co-financed more than 5,000 projects helping Europe to become greener. As of 2021, the LIFE programme includes the new Clean Energy Transition sub-programme.

The LIFE programme's main goals are to:

EU Missions in Horizon Europe

EU Missions are large-scale initiatives under Horizon Europe setting clear, time-bound goals that drive focused efforts towards some of our greatest challenges such as climate change, cancer, ocean restoration, soil health, and the development of climate-neutral and smart cities. By bringing together researchers, policymakers, citizens, and stakeholders, EU Missions pool the necessary resources to drive innovation and deliver concrete solutions for societal benefit.

The European Commission has launched five EU Missions:

Horizon Europe. Cluster 5: Climate, Energy and Mobility

This cluster aims to fight climate change by better understanding its causes, evolution, risks, impacts and opportunities, and by making the energy and transport sectors more climate and environment-friendly, more efficient and competitive, smarter, safer and more resilient.

The expected impacts of this cluster are contained in the Horizon Europe strategic plan.

Areas of intervention

Public Sector Loan Facility

The Public Loan Facility complements the two other pillars of the Just Transition Mechanism, the Just Transition Fund (JTF) and a dedicated just transition scheme under InvestEU. It helps to address the socio-economic challenges of the transition to climate neutrality in the most affected territories as identified in the territorial Just Transition Plans.

URBACT IV

Since 2002, URBACT has been driving change all over Europe by enabling the cooperation and idea exchange amongst cities within thematic networks, by building the skills of local stakeholders in the design and implementation of integrated and participatory policies, and by sharing knowledge and good city practices.
