Gleisdorf defies the heat: Successful heat walk raises awareness of climate change

Gleisdorf, Austria

As part of the Climate-Neutral Cities 2040 programme, the city is protecting trees, avoiding peat and pesticides, and limiting soil sealing. To raise awareness, the climate manager leads climate walks where people learn simple ways to stay cool and discover how green spaces help the city cope with extreme heat.

How is Gleisdorf addressing the impact of heatwaves?

Climate Walks

As Gleisdorf is part of the Climate-Neutral Cities 2040 programme, the city's climate plan focuses also on activities for climate change adaptation. The city council has committed within the municipality to avoid pesticides and the use of peat. Further on there is a limit of 30 % for soil sealing among the city area, trees are registered and protected while roadworks. An example for an activity to raise awareness: the climate manager offers regularly climate walks.

On 6 June, the municipality of Gleisdorf's first heat walk took place in midsummer temperatures. The goal was to raise awareness of the increasing heat stress in urban areas and to highlight practical everyday protective measures. Participants explored simple yet effective measures to cope with rising temperatures—such as staying hydrated, wearing hats, and seeking shade. The event also highlighted the crucial role of urban planning and nature-based solutions, with experts providing information on heat urban islands, urban greening, rainwater harvesting and the role of urban forest as a natural climate regulator.
