As summer comes to a close, the effects of climate change have never been more visible: a drought that gripped Europe, unprecedented heatwaves in both intensity and duration, and catastrophic wildfires sweeping across several EU countries.
Yet municipalities are no strangers to these challenges. For years, they have implemented adaptation and mitigation measures planned in their the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs), tracking and reporting their progress in MyCovenant. But as climate change intensifies, so must the response. MyCovenant is evolving to ensure that cities are focusing their time and energy in implementing their plans and making things happen.
From this point forward, reporting will be simpler, giving municipalities more time for what truly matters: taking action for a climate-neutral and resilient future.
Same structure, easier visualisation and simplified options
The EU Covenant of Mayors has developed an updated version of MyCovenant, responding to CoM-munity feedback and adapting to the evolving context. The core reporting structure remains unchanged. The EU Covenant upholds its commitment to transparent and rigorous climate planning, helping signatories act on science-based targets and with an integrated approach.
What is changing is the form, to make it the process easier and more intuitive for signatories: with a platform design that is now simpler and more user-friendly.
Content hierarchy has been clarified: mandatory fields appear first, with optional fields at the bottom. Inline guidance has been enhanced through integrated tooltips and notifications. Navigation has been improved, providing faster access to key sections.
Signatories will also have two alternative reporting pathways for emission inventories, allowing them to choose between the full version or a simplified option. Additionally, MyCovenant will require less data from signatories thanks to better integration with available regional and national datasets. Finally, data reported in MyCovenant will be reflected on signatory webpages, which now feature improved visualisations.
Reducing data duplication while improving visualisation
While the updates to MyCovenant's reporting represent a significant shift, they are designed to avoid disrupting signatories' efforts. Existing commitments and SECAPs remain unchanged, as does the collective commitment to climate neutrality. Indeed, these changes will reduce data duplication and the time spent on reporting, streamlining municipal workflows without diminishing engagement.
To help signatories navigate the new features, the EU Office of the Covenant of Mayors will publish a series of articles explaining the changes. In the meantime, an explainer covering all updates is already available here. Additionally, the helpdesk remains available to support signatories through the transition.
MyCovenant evolves to answer the CoM-munity needs
Signatories will have less and simpler reporting to complete, freeing up more capacity for implementation.
Meanwhile, the CoM-munity will benefit from new data made available by municipalities, while signatories themselves will need to provide less information.
MyCovenant is evolved thanks to the CoM-munity’s feedback, and will continue to do so. The EU Covenant of Mayors has always been a bottom-up movement, evolving with the ever-changing landscape of climate action while staying true to one core objective: strengthening signatories’ efforts towards a climate-neutral, resilient and inclusive future.
