Mediterranean’s Future +0.5°C workshop: Energy: Sharing the Sun, Wind and Waves

Muratpaşa Municipality is convening scientists, experts, young people and artists for the fifth edition of its Mediterranean’s Future +0.5°C workshop series, titled “Energy: Sharing the Sun, Wind and Waves”, to be held on 5–6 December 2025 at the Türkan Şoray Cultural Center in Antalya.

Framed as a concrete step in the city’s fight against the climate crisis, the workshop will explore how Mediterranean cities can harness solar, wind and wave power, increase energy efficiency and accelerate a just transition away from fossil fuels. Discussions will address energy poverty, access to clean and affordable energy as a basic right, and the role of local governments in achieving climate targets.

Muratpaşa Mayor Ümit Uysal underlines that the workshop series “Mediterranean’s Future +0.5°C” aims to reduce the region’s climate vulnerability while strengthening social justice. By bringing together science, policy, youth action and the arts under the theme of energy, the municipality seeks to inspire practical solutions that can be implemented at the neighbourhood and city scale.

The first day of the programme will open with a keynote address by climate scientist Prof. Dr. M. Levent Kurnaz, followed by a Renewable Energy Technologies session featuring leading academics and practitioners who will discuss the global energy transition, Türkiye’s energy policies and opportunities for solar, wind and wave power in the Mediterranean. A second session on Energy Efficiency will focus on nearly zero-energy buildings, resilient cities and the use of artificial intelligence in smart power systems.

In the evening, a special public programme titled “The Case for Nature: Defending the Climate Law and Olive Groves” will be moderated by journalist Özlem Gürses, with contributions from Mayor Ümit Uysal, journalist Hilal Köylü and Prof. Dr. Renan Tunalıoğlu. The discussion will highlight the importance of climate legislation and the protection of olive groves as cultural and ecological heritage.

The second day will be shaped by the Antalya Young Climate Leaders Platform (AGIP). Young participants will share their experiences through a symposium, climate-themed theatre and interactive activities under the heading “Climate-Friendly Jobs”, showcasing new forms of employment that support a low‑carbon future. The programme will close with a concert by the Bahçeşehir College Lara Campus Orchestra, turning the workshop into a festival of climate awareness and youth creativity.

Throughout the two days, the venue will also host a rich art and design programme. Events organised by Akdeniz University Serik Gülsün–Süleyman Süral Vocational School, the Independent Art Movement and the Contemporary Art Group for Artistic Upcycling will include fashion shows and workshops on low‑energy and fair fashion, wearable art performances, the exhibition “GAIA / The Spirit of the Earth”, olive‑themed felt workshops and installations such as “Sharing Energy”, “Traces of Sustainable Time” and “Living World”, all of which reinterpret renewable energy and sustainability through contemporary art.

The Antalya Young Climate Leaders Platform (AGIP) has been developed within a project supported by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with Muratpaşa Municipality and local civil society organisations, aiming to strengthen youth participation in local climate and energy policies.

Members of the press, civil society organisations, professionals, students and residents are encouraged to follow the workshop and side events and to join the collective effort to build a fair, climate‑resilient Mediterranean.
