Lviv, Ukraine
Through the Urban Workshop initiative, Lviv is turning climate challenges into community action. Together, citizens are planting trees, installing rooftop solar panels, building rain gardens, and turning empty spaces into green areas for everyone to enjoy. The Ukrainian city is showing how local efforts can make neighbourhoods cooler and more resilient.

How is the city of Lviv addressing the impact of heatwaves?
Urban Workshop initiative
The City Institute, within the framework of the Urban Workshop initiative, annually organises events aimed at popularising and implementing environmental solutions. These include tree planting, creating new public eco-spaces with street equipment and green spaces, promotional tours, city workshops, and introductory meetings on environmental topics for residents.
Promotional meetings and tours include visits to the first rooftop solar power plant, demonstrating the benefits of alternative energy source. They also include excursions to the composting station near the future waste processing plant, which are held annually.
As part of the Urban Workshop initiative, the foundation for a future eco-educational space has been laid in Lviv Park in the form of a vegetable garden. This space allows all residents to participate in workshops focused on planting agricultural and ornamental plants. Additionally, in areas of the city requiring more landscaping, the Urban Workshops team, in collaboration with local partners and residents, has installed prototypes of mobile landscaping in certain locations. This includes the creation of rain gardens, eco-parking lots, the planting of grapes on the city library building, and more.
The city is also developing the UNBROKEN ecosystem — a network of facilities dedicated to the rehabilitation of Ukrainians injured in the war. This includes not only medical and rehabilitation centers but also housing for the families of patients, ensuring support during the most difficult times. The buildings feature sustainable solutions such as timber constructions, green facades and inclusive public spaces to reduce heat and improve energy efficiency.
